If you are in Canada from 1 minute to 48 hours all liquor is subject to a small duty based on Customs discretion.

Yes, it is perfectly legal to purchase additional bottles of alcohol or cases of beer, when heading back into the USA, as long as it is for personal consumption. All additional liquor purchases, which exceed your personal exemptions are subject to Duty.
